Dummy text, also known as placeholder text or filler text, is used in the design and publishing industry as a way to fill a page layout with content without using meaningful text. The most famous example of dummy text is “Lorem Ipsum,” a scrambled version of a passage from classical Latin literature. But is dummy text actually Latin, or just gibberish?
The most common dummy text, “Lorem Ipsum,” originates from a work by the Roman philosopher Cicero. Specifically, it comes from “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 B.C. The original passage discusses hedonism and ethics, but the dummy text we use today is not a direct, intelligible copy of Cicero’s work.
“Lorem Ipsum” was first popularized in the 1500s, during the era of printing presses. A typesetter, looking for filler text to demonstrate font styles and layouts, scrambled parts of Cicero’s writing. Over time, this scrambled version became standard in typesetting, design, and web development.
Contrary to what many people assume, “Lorem Ipsum” is not simply random text. It has a clear origin in classical Latin, but the version we use today has been so altered that it’s not legible Latin anymore. The structure and word lengths mimic natural language, making it useful for representing text in a layout while remaining neutral and not distracting.
Latin, being a “dead” language, is less likely to distract readers or clients who are evaluating a design. Its unfamiliarity and the fact that it doesn’t carry any modern meanings allow designers to focus solely on the layout and design elements without the content being a distraction. Using real, meaningful text in design might lead clients to focus on the content rather than the aesthetic structure.
Furthermore, Latin’s classical roots give it an air of sophistication. This makes it a suitable choice for both historical reasons and practical applications in modern design.
While “Lorem Ipsum” has its roots in Latin, not all dummy text is necessarily Latin. Designers and developers sometimes use other placeholder texts or even random sentences when they need filler content. However, “Lorem Ipsum” remains the most commonly used and recognized type of dummy text across industries.
Today, “Lorem Ipsum” is a standard tool in digital design and publishing. Website mockups, brochures, and other types of design materials often use it to display content without having to worry about the actual written material until later stages of the design process. Various software tools and websites allow designers to generate “Lorem Ipsum” text in different lengths and formats for use in their projects.
As technology evolves, so does the use of dummy text. Nowadays, there are even “Lorem Ipsum” generators that allow users to create custom filler text using modern phrases, humor, or other languages. Despite this, traditional “Lorem Ipsum” text remains the go-to standard in many industries due to its long-standing history and neutral nature.
